Eastcote CC Won By 18 runs with 12.1 overs to spare (CVL Game 1)

Match report
CVL GAME 1 Eastcote CC beat Ealing Hanwelians CC by 18 runs in a thriller away at Hanwell CC on 2 June 2019. Men of the Match: Charlie Hobday and Rohit Venkateshan with Sam Harvey and Shaariq Sheikh close. Ealing Hanwelians were 107/2 after 17.3 overs (chasing 182 off 45 overs) but we showed true Eastcote spirit pulling them back to 128 for 8 after 28 overs before keeping our cool to get the last 2 wickets at 161 and 163.

Eastcote won the toss and elected to bat on a track which appeared uneven and dusty, albeit hard; and we weren't sure how well it would last into the second knock. We had a good side out but were wary of Ealing Hanwelians who had just hammered Uxbridge and play unorthodox but hard and have a decent attack with bowlers taking the pace off the ball. We had beaten them last year but it was close.

We opened up with the in-form Tom Hudson and the returning Jean Sebastien Saleem (whose last CVL game produced a near ton). JS didn't last long getting bowled by a ball which kept low (26/1 off 3.4 overs). Rashard came in and kept his head nicely over the ball again but then Tom got run out just as he was making batting look easy whilst others would struggle (26 in 3 overs was all down to Tom's mastery). Again Tom produced a pleasing array of shots with superb timing, playing the ball late and keeping it on the ground whenever that was the better option, with immaculate ball selection. Tom hit 26 off 14 balls (6 fours) and looked well on his way to his 4th Sunday ton but for the run out (26 for 2). Charlie Hobday joined Rashard but we soon lost Rash, who got trapped in front to a ball cutting back (for 19 off 8 balls with 2 fours and a six), soon after two stunning hits. 45 for 3. Charlie Hobday played a very sensible yet aggressive knock on a track where the ball often kept low and some jumped....and Shaariq again played with a very strong head position (to stitch together a sensible stand of 53 with Chobday) until he lifted a drive to short extra-cover to fall for 19 off 22 balls (3 fours). Thanks to Charlie hitting anything hittable so well, we were 98 when Shaariq fell and still looking on course for even 300 with many overs left. We had split our 4 left handers through the order, to trouble the opposition and try and gain wides (worked since they bowled 14 wides to our 6), so southpaw Ron Pratley came in next but fell soon, stretching forward to a ball which kept low and trapped him LBW for 1 off 8 balls (108 for 5). Sam Harvey then joined Chobday and batted really sensibly trying to take the game deep and do nothing foolish. Charlie's knock ended with our score at 167: caught behind for a superb 64 (off 78 balls with 4 fours and 2 sixes). His knock kept us in the game and without it there would be no win; hence he was one of our 2 MOMs. Southpaw Rohit Venkateshan went in at 8 but made only 2 off 7 balls and then Krish Patwal on his CVL debut hit a superb boundary and looked in great nick until he lifted a drive just a bit to be taken out at short extra-cover by a stunning diving catch (5 off 7 balls)....ECC 179 for 8. Arvind joined Sam but Sam got done by a cruel grubber three overs later (for 24 off 42 balls with 1 four..great knock which gave us just those extra runs to win the game). Aryan Thakrar played across a ball which kept a bit low three balls later...so we fell for 181 with the very sad statistic of 9.2 overs left unused..which is poor in a limited overs game irrespective of the condition of the wicket. It is very important to utilise all 45 overs. Thanks to Charlie, Sam and Tom we didn't fold totally.

We opened up with Sam Harvey, who bowled a tidy spell of 6 overs for 33 runs (only going for some good wristy boundaries) and trapped one opener LBW (19 for 1). Aryan Thakrar wasn't his usual self going for 26 off 2 overs with the new ball, so Shaariq replaced him pronto and bowled 6 tidy overs for 24 runs picking up their skipper and other opener. Arvind replaced Sam and tried to entice a wicket but came off after a poor third over (3 overs for 20). They were 107 for 2 after 17 overs when Rohit was introduced from Shaariq's end, to change things and unsettle two set batters; although Shaariq was bowling well. Rohit got 2 wickets off consecutive balls in his first over. 107 for 4; and Ron Pratley's left arm spin replaced Arvind to quieten things down a bit and play on the low bounce at the other end. Rohit was taken off after his killer first over and Shaariq was back on, the idea being to alternate them after every over to avoid the batters settling and create wickets somehow. It worked as Rohit got a wicket with the second ball of his second over (after Shaariq bowled a solitary over); and then Rashard took a brilliant catch diving forward at slip off Shaariq as Rohit came off again after one over. Rashard took another sharp slip catch off Shaariq's next ball to give us another two-wicket over; and with Ron having lured a batter the previous over; we were suddenly on top with Ealing Hanwelians crumbling to 128 for 8 after 28 overs. Rohit and Shaariq kept alternating and Ron bowled a tidy spell of 5 overs; to be replaced by Krish Patwal who bowled a decent over. But they were now 158 for 8 off 30, with two sensible batters; and they do bat deep. They only needed 24 to win with 15 overs left and were knocking it around intelligently and hitting the loose ball. It was getting back in balance and possibly going away from us. Another ruthless decision was taken with the support of Krish Patwal who came off after just one over for 7 runs; and Sam Harvey came back on to bowl straight and take two LBWs with his first two overs of the death spell to get us home with just 13 runs left. Rohit turned this game on its head with 3 top order wickets off 8 balls when they were cruising at 107 for 2; so he was the joint MOM.

Shaariq with superb bowling over 10 overs (10-1-35-3) and 19 runs and Sam Harvey (7.5-0-37-3 and 24 runs) also put in superb performances. Rohit with 4-0-20-3 was the destroyer and Ron weighed in with 5-1-20-1.

A top come from behind win with 4 super bowling displays (Rohit, Shaariq, Sam & Ron) and two stunning catches by Rash as well as a great running catch at long on by Chobday, apart from generally good ground fielding (after we started disastrously with 2 dropped catches in the first over of the innings) took us home. If one believes one can win , then one has a chance and no match is won until it is lost. Also what helped us was embracing the fact that getting wickets wins matches (only 10 wickets have to be taken) so there are times going for broke works; especially without enough runs to squeeze pressure from.

The lads were superbly selfless giving up their own space for others, everyone playing not for self but for the team and his mates; and that attitude was the main reason we prevailed today.

ADDITIONAL REPORT:

Game 6 was the real deal: our first game away and our first league game on 2 June. We had beaten Ealing Hanwelians at Ealing in the league last year (one of our only 2 wins). Win the toss and let Rash and Tom lose was a good plan. We won the toss but then Rash ran Tom out and Rev trapped Rash in front from the umpire’s end. With JS struggling for a blob we were soon struggling at 45/3. Charlie Hobday then hit an amazing 64 on a wicket of uneven bounce and Shaariq (19) and Sam Harvey (24) helped him take the score to 181. We were disappointed to get bowled out around 10 overs short of our quota. The Hanwelians were boasting that they preferred to chase 300 plus on their ground and were complaining of boredom during lunch. They started off like they boasted and were soon 101 for 2 in 17 overs (needing 81 to win off 28 overs). Desperate measures were needed so Rohit replaced Shaariq, took 2 wickets but came off for Shaariq to come back on and then Shaariq and Rohit bowled (from one end) alternating single overs by turn from the far end (offie and leggie not allowing batters to settle and attacking and searching for wickets) as Ron Pratley bottled things from the pavilion end for 5 good tight overs with an LBW off an arm ball. Krish Patwal bowled one over after Ron but was ruthlessly replaced by Sam Harvey who closed off the last 2 wickets by bowling straight and letting the uneven bounce do the rest (good lad): to end with 3/37. Rohit had 3/20 and Shaariq 3/35 as Ealing Hanwelians were blasted out for 162. The opposition’s ashen and amusedly ashamed faces were a sight for our sore eyes. This was a most satisfying win from a hopeless position and a huge advert for self-believing one can win no matter what. It also gave us belief that this was our season and we needed to focus every game and every ball and give it our best shot and we could perhaps win every game in the league and in fact in the whole season (friendlies included).
