Alexander Park v Eastcote CC Sunday 2nd Team on Sun 17 Jun 2012 at 1.30pm
Eastcote CC Won by 124 runs
Match report
After a commanding win against 'local' Brentham the previous week, the Academy made it's way to 'not so local' Alexandra Palace to visit Alexandra Park C.C. in week two of the Chess Valley League.
After a long, arduous journey where the 'elder' statesman, Path Rasan and Neil 'Stanley' Stevens has us driving in circles around Ali Pali, we were welcomed by the sight of a boggy outfield, which Stanley, in typically over-reactive fashion said was 'unplayable'. After listening to Stan's words, skipper Moody promptly won the toss and elected to bat first.
With the return of the 'evergreen' Path Rasan to provide a stable, wise head at the top of the order, Sam sent out the enthusiastic Adam Harding to bat at number 2, in the hopes that Path could instill some of the focus and sound shot selection that he has become synonymous with him down the years, onto a younger batsman. Unfortunately, this wasn't the case, Adam, much like Rev the previous week, got an inswinging yorker 2nd ball and couldn't get his bat down in time.
Being the academy side, this is a side to develop the younger players with hopes they'd move up the ladder and play at a higher standard of cricket. The skipper obviously didn't get the memo, as with the fall of the first wicket he sent in Stanley. There was now over 100 years of cricketing experience at the crease!!! Youth policy at it's best.
On a pitch that can only be described as a sponge, runs were always going to be hard to come by. Path and Stanley delved into the century of cricketing acumen to ably see of the new ball and put on a half century partnership before Path fell leg before for 33. This bought skipper Moody to the crease to the sultry tones of Stan, declaring 150 would be a good score on the deck. Moody had other ideas, especially with such a short boundary on one side, flicking a 6 from middle stump over the midwicket boundary. Stan joined the party hitting a maximum over long on followed by a rather excitable 'get in'. Unfortunately that was Stan's last contribution with the bat, bowled to the off spinners quicker ball for a well made 33.
'The Doc', Sudath, fell for a brisk 14 which bought young Charlie 'go hard or go home' Hobday to the crease. Before skipper Moody got to the crease, Charlie had a few tips for the captain, 'play straight and wait for the bad ball' were wise words from someone so young. So, in keeping with this, Charlie thought it would be an idea to play a booming pull shot off his 3rd ball, the ball didn't get above his knees and was a coat of paint away from off stump. His own advice now ringing in his ears from the captain. In fairness, Charlie did play straight to the ball he got out to, but unfortunately he got an absolute snorter, that pitching half way up the track didn't get above his toes. LBW for 12. Moody followed soon after for a 70 ball 83 to an absolutely fantastic catch from their resident West Indian. Cameo's from Phil Smith and James Fielding at the end bought the total to a rather herculean (considering the deck) 225-8.
225 was going to be a tall task for any team on this pitch and so it proved as Eastcote, once again led by Mr. Consistency, Matt Hobday (3-9 off 10 overs!!), took wickets consistently, bowling out Alexandra Park for 111.
The spin twins Phil Smith and James Fielding shared 6 wickets and both showed excellent control to wrap up the innings. Charlie Hobday providing sweet revenge for the snorter he got in the 1st innings by bowling his own for his wicket in a well controlled opening spell partnering his brother Matt.
Another convincing all round performance from the boys, meaning we have a 100% record. With a weekend off next week, we look forward to inviting Hanwell C.C. to hill in 2 weeks time.
Up the Eastcote.
