Eastcote CC U13B v Ruislip on Tue 04 Jun 2013 at 6pm
Eastcote CC Won By 32 runs
Match report
This was very much a game of two halves for us. To be honest, the approach to the game was good and the boys were definitely up for it, with Sam at the front leading them.
Sam won the toss on a slightly more chilly evening and decided to bat. A very good decision. Ruislip were second in the league and had only lost one game which was to us on the first league week of the season. I'm told it is always very nerve wracking coming to Eastcote to play, but this did not look like the same Ruislip team that only scored 39 runs against us in the previous encounter. Our boys however looked confident and we did have a very strong team out.
Our opening pair this week was Lucas and Harrison, who had both performed very consistently so far this season. Tom was unavailable this week, so the pressure was on to hit the first ball for 6, which is what usually happens when 'Beefy' Tom is at the crease. Harrison was still confident that the first ball would sail over the boundary for 6 as he said he had been practising swinging the bat all week just to make sure. I thought he was practising to hit a 6 but he had actually been practising swinging the bat at head height just to make sure Lucas knew he was on strike and Harrison was number 2!
Once play began it was business as usual. The two openers ran well between the wickets and put the bad ball away. Our goal is always to be around the 50 mark or more after 10 overs for as few wickets as possible, and the boys did their job well with us being 51 off 10 for 0. The score started to push along from the 11th over until Harrison missed a straight one and was bowled for 25. This brought Daniel to the crease who is also in great form at the moment and began immediately to score runs. Lucas accelerated his score superbly and manoeuvred the ball all round the outfield with strength and guile. I have seen Lucas bat many times and scored good runs, but this was without a doubt his best innings for Eastcote. It was an almost perfectly structured innings and was a joy to watch.
He ended up on an unbeaten 89, the highest score so far this year in our team. A fantastic effort Lucas well done.
And so to the fielding.
The boys took the field with confidence, as they should of with such a good score posted. Imaad came down the hill and was his usual, aggressive and accurate self only conceding 4 runs off his 2 overs. Zak came up the hill and struggled initially to find his line but that is always a problem when bowling up the hill at Eastcote. Once he got his rhythm however he bowled very well. Then it all seemed to go wrong. I think the boys felt the game was done after the 4th over and I saw a change in the approach. Our bowling became ill-disciplined, our fielding became lazy, and we were as quiet as we have ever been. As a coach who has worked with these boys for so many years now, it was very disappointing to see such a change. I must state however this was not the entire team, but was the majority! I signalled so many wide balls that it must have looked like we were talking about fishing and I was being asked 'how big was the one that got away"?
I'm not going to say anymore about it as we had a good 'chat' in the changing room afterwards, and for all those parents who thought they heard swearing coming through the very thin walls, it was actually genuine cricket terminology direct from the MCC coaching handbook.
As if I would ever swear!!!!!!!
At the end of the day however we did win and the boys did the job. Hopefully they all learnt a lesson from the game, and the same mistakes will not be made again.
