Match report
Eastcote travelled to Wandsworth on a beautiful sunny day to play a strong Spencer Club under 13 team from the North East and Central Surrey League in a friendly match. Eastcote only took 10 players due to an unfortunate last-minute illness for Zakariyya. Spencer featured several Inner London District players. This was to prove Eastcote's toughest match of the season so far. The match was played in the style of Spencer's league games: 24 overs, 2 runs and no extra balls for wides and no balls, batsman retire at 30.
Eastcote captain Sanka lost the toss and Eastcote were put in to bat. Shivam and Divyam opened the batting and faced some extremely tight bowling from Spencer, finding it very difficult to score runs. Shivam had just started to push the score along when he was caught for 17. This brought in Imaad, who also found runs hard to come by. Divyam was retired after 12 overs for a grafting 19. Imaad was caught behind soon after off the excellent Wajid Shah. Varun and Sanka also struggled to score against the fine Spencer bowling. It looked like Eastcote were heading for a fairly modest total. Both were out in one over, then Thomas set about the bowling applying his own scientific method of batting: if it moves hit it very hard!! He retired on 30 off 12 balls just before the end, Eastcote finishing on a defendable 117 for 4.
The mathmaticians worked out that each Eastcote player would have to give 110% to make up for the missing fielder. The Eastcote team obviously decided that this impossibility was actually possible, as they produced arguably their best fielding performance of the season!! Imaad and Jonathan opened the bowling and Spencer were soon on 14 for 3, with Jonathan clean bowling 2 in 2 balls and a run out with an amazing direct hit from Imaad on the boundary. Spencer then staged a recovery led by a good innings from Charlie Parfect, threatening to run away with the game, before the Sam Davies show took over. Sam took 4 wickets blowing away the middle order. Shivam, as always, bowled very tidily, conceding just 3 off his 3 overs. Spencer were teetering on 77 for 8, but still had the dangerous Wajid, who had quietly kept his wicket intact. He began to let loose and the game was on a knife edge. However, a brilliant run out from that man Sam left Spencer needing 17 off 23 balls, but with only 1 wicket left. Imaad kept his cool and took the final wicket with Spencer 4 runs short, Wajid not out on 33.
This was a very entertaining game played with great spirit from both sides. The umpires awarded the match ball to their choice of man of the match. Mentioned were Thomas for his brilliant innings and flawless wicket-keeping, Sam for his 4 wickets and good fielding, but the award went to Wajid Shah for an excellent spell of spin bowling and his nearly match-winning innings.
Thanks to Spencer for their hospitality, we hope to invite them to Eastcote in the near future. Thanks to Dilshard for umpiring, and all the parents who drove the team across London and gave great support to the boys. Well done everyone, give yourselves a pat on the back!!
