Eastcote CC U13A v Harrow St Mary on Tue 29 Apr 2014 at 5.30pm
Eastcote CC Won By 65 Runs

Match report This was our first league game of the season and our first competitive game as the U13A's, with a new look squad, and some very tall cricketers!

I'm not sure what Tesco's are selling for lunchbox snacks at the moment, but either Jonny, Daniel, Lucas and Harrison have spent the winter standing in fresh manure, or their sandwiches have had a slight tang!

After our great game against the U15B side a couple of weeks ago, and a couple of good training sessions, the boys look very strong and the team spirit is extremely high. Our new members to the team (Max, Aiden, Jafer, Anand and Vishay) have slipped in like a Phil Golding putt on the 18th green, and have added fantastic strength and depth to the side.

The captain of the day was to be Daniel who has had a superb winter training with Middlesex and an elite academy. He took his team for a good warm up and we had a meaningful chat in the dressing room ready to begin the game.

All we required now was an opposition!

HSM finally arrived and Daniel won the toss and elected to bat. A good group decision. Our first incident of descent then occurred upon the reading out of the batting order, as a very upset Jonny Napier threw his arms and legs about like a stick insect caught in a spiders web once he heard he was to be number 11! It was decided that as a ONE TIME deal Jonny would open the batting as long as he promised never to show us that display again, not because I was angry but because it took 10 minutes for the boys to stop laughing.

Jonny and Lucas opened the batting against a fairly decent HSM attack. Lucas, who has also been training with Middlesex, struck the ball well from the start scoring regularly and looked solid keeping the scoreboard ticking over. Daniel's plan was to have 30 runs after 5 overs, 60 after 10 overs, and then to progress from there. The scoreboard seemed to agree with Daniel as the targets were met perfectly. The bad ball was put away and running between the wickets not bad at all for the first game. In the future we will need to take more singles but that will come.

The opening pair put on 56 for the first wicket with the honours spread evenly, Lucas got all the runs and Jonny missed all the balls. The one ball that Jonny did hit sweetly however was then caught by the HSM fielder and he was out.

This brought the talented Zeeshan to the crease. In all the years I have known Zeeshan he constantly has a smile on his face. Is this because he is a nice, happy and innocent young man. I think not! The only other person I know has a permanent smile on their face is the Joker from Batman, and we all know what he got up to!

Zeeshan faced his first delivery and he played his signature late cut for four. He and Lucas then put on a stand of 40 in 5 overs, with Zeeshan rotating the strike to the inform Lucas superbly. Zeeshan was bowled in the 13th over trying to accelerate the scoring further, and the tall figure of the captain came striding to the crease. Lucas kept scoring well and eventually got to his well deserved 50 with some fierce striking both sides of the wicket.

The 11th member of the HSM team suddenly turned up and entered the field of play in wicket keeping gear. The next ball saw Lucas run down the wicket and miss a floated leg spinner. The keeper took the ball and stumps in the same swift movement and the Lucas show came to an end with a fantastic 67.

Really well batted Lucas it was a pleasure to watch!

Daniel was joined by Jafer, who instantly looked at ease at the crease with a single and some solid looking shots. The new HSM wicket keeper was in play again taking an extremely sharp catch off Daniel who was out for 4.

This brought Max John to the crease, making his Eastcote CC league debut. Max joined us from HSM, so he was greeted with some harsh words and stares from the opposition fielders, but he showed great composure and concentration and set about the task in hand, striking the ball well and running hard. He and Jafer then proceeded to dominate the bowling attack, scoring 22 in the last 3 overs, including a huge six from Max over the mid wicket boundary 20/20 style. He fell in the last over to a good catch at mid off, which gave our off spinning all rounder Sam 5 balls to face at the end. It is always a thankless task coming in at the death, but he got a quick single and gave Jafer the strike who ended up 8 not out.

The team finished on a very competitive score of 130 for 5 off 20 overs.

When Eastcote entered the field it was apparent to all that these boys meant business! Daniel set a very good field, and another U13A debutant in Vishay opened the bowling. I love the way Vishay bowls. He runs up hard and attacks the crease, and gives a real grunt when he bowls. To be fair he is only 3ft 4 so it's more like a squeak then a grunt, but the effort is fantastic! The HSM openers looked very good and attacking, but Vishay bowled superbly not giving them any width at all. Kailum opened up with Vish, and bowled with amazing control and flight. The buzz from the fielders, captain, and debutant wicket keeper Harrison, was constant and helped to apply more and more pressure to the HSM openers. Sam and Zeshan took over the bowling duties and continued the pressure, along with some superb fielding with the boys diving about and working together. The pressure finally became too much when, in the 10th over the ball got hit to Jafer in the deep who attacked the ball and threw it in to Harrison behind the stumps for the run out. The next wicket fell only 3 balls later when Lucas bowled the HSM batsmen for 0. The wickets then began to fall at regular periods, caused mainly by great bowling a superb fielding which was applying too much pressure for the HSM batsmen. Max, Kailen, Jonny and Jafer all came on to bowl, and all performed brilliantly, not allowing the HSM batsmen to have any rest from the good lines and lengths. Daniel ended up using 9 bowlers enabling everyone apart from himself and Harrison (WK) to get a go. HSM were finally all out for 74, which included 4 run outs. Harrison kept superbly behind the stumps, allowing only 2 byes to get past him and being involved in all 4 run outs.

All in all a very professional performance from what is looking to be an extremely strong side.

A special thank you to Jason (or Beardyman as he is now to be known) for scoring, and to all the parents for supporting the boys.

Game 1 in the bag!
