Eastcote CC Won by 42 runs

Match report Natwest U15 National Cup – Area Semi Final

Eastcote won by 41 runs.

Eastcote 123 for 5 in 20 overs.
Harrow St Mary’s 81 for 8 in 20 overs.

A brief respite in the weather, to what has otherwise been a rather damp start to the season, just about enabled the semi-final clash between Eastcote and Harrow St Mary’s to be played on an overcast and dull evening at Headstone Lane, Eastcote completing a 41 run win over Harrow St Mary’s to take them into the Area Final of the Natwest U15 National Cup.

Weeks of wet weather invariably made the outfield soft underfoot and the wicket itself to lose a bit of pace from being under covers, but a welcome relief to have got the match underway in complete contrast to the previous day, when further localised rain in the afternoon forced the cancellation of a league match an hour before the scheduled commencement to play.

Harrow St Mary’s won the toss and elected to field, a toss which Eastcote in hindsight might have been happy to have lost.
Eastcote openers Omar Mohamed (22) and Rahul Wijeratne (53 retired) having taken a few over to adjust to the pace and condition of the wicket, then maintained a healthy run rate to put on 70 in 10 overs, and for Eastcote to eventually set a target of 123 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in their allotted 20 overs, slightly pegged back in the last couple of overs with the middle order unable to score freely, including an inexcusable dismissal involving Hemanshu Hirani (16), stumped off a wide, wondering aimlessly outside the crease and left stranded by a direct throw at the stumps by the keeper standing back.

Requiring a rate of 6 runs an over, Harrow St Mary’s openers Andrew Thomas (23) and Rohan Radia (23) began cautiously and soon fell behind on the run rate to the bowling of Naresh Rasakulasuriar and Alex Cole , both ending up wicketless but bowling well and drawing false strokes from the HSM batsmen, including a huge let off when inform County batsman Andrew Thomas was dropped on 15 by Hirani from what appeared to be a relatively straightforward skyer in the covers running back. The let off didn’t prove costly as the openers were restricted to 44 in their first 11 overs. The introduction of spin then saw a clutter of wickets to the spinners with Zeshaan Mahmood taking 4 wickets for 10 runs in 2 overs, with Amaan Lakhani and Philip Lloyd claiming a wicket each. The other wicket takers for Eastcote were Jonathan Philips taking 1 for 1.

George Wickham kept admirably standing in for regular keeper Ashane Wijesuriya away on a school cricket tour, and a fine catch by Alex Cole diving to his right at square leg to dismiss A Gupta off the bowling of Jonathan Phillips contributed to the result.
