Match report MATCH REPORT SUNDAY EASTCOTE CC VS OLD CITIZENS CC AT HOME 12TH MAY 2019: Eastcote won by 142 runs

Eastcote won the toss and elected to bat at home (40 overs a side limited over friendly)

Opened with Tom Hudson and our overseas Rashard Fuller at a shade past 1 pm under the sun. The oppo captain Richard Hillman was an ex Eastcote colt from the colt days of our Director of Cricket. Andrew Bailee in a traditional cricket sun hat officiating and (Rev) Tim Hayes in trademark T-shirt and glasses scoring made for a perfect day at home.

Charlie Hobday with a brilliant ton (117), U-13 Reece Jones with 53 not out, Tom Hudson 31 and Ronak Patel 18 batted well. Young adult debutant U-14 Affan Kundi bowled a fiery opening spell (6-0-36-2) with reliable Aryan Thakrar nabbing 3 wickets bowling to a 7-2 field throughout (7-1-24-3). Both swung and seamed the ball and bowled a full or back of length accurately to leave Old Citizens tottering at 5 down for 60, after the first 12 overs.

Eastcote worked their way to 284 for off the 40 overs with Charlie Hobday batting at 4 smashing his way to a gloriously delightful left-handed ton ( 117 off 77 balls with 13 fours and 5 sixes and a strike rate of 152) with positive strokeplay hitting both good balls and bad. He had top stands of 84 for the 4th wicket with colt Ronak Patel batting at 5 (18 off 25 balls) and 79 runs for the 5th wicket with young U-13 Reece Jones batting at 6; shepherding both really well (bringing his coaching nous into play). Young Reece did all the basics well and kept his shape and composure to score his maiden 50 for Eastcote in any format (and was special coming in an adult game against a side who had beaten us both times earlier). Reece came in at 20.1 overs and remained undefeated after 40 overs to score 53 off 72 balls with 3 fours. The start was awful with us losing Rashard to a blob (2 for 1 in the opening over) to their most experienced seamer, who cut one back brilliantly. Grand groundsman Tom Hudson scored 31 off 28 balls with 5 fours and young Shaariq Sheikh batting at 3 hit 8 off 15 balls with 1 six, nicking behind (35 for 2 off 5.4 overs). Tom was third out at 60 (9.6 overs). Ronak 4th at 144 (20.1 ov) and Charlie 5th at 223 (29.1 overs). Aryan Thakrar with 10 took us to 247-6 (34.4 overs) and then Arvind, Affan Kundi and Deepak fell cheaply whilst Reece accelerated intelligently to take us to 284 for 9 (with Scott Rutherford in his first game of the season staying with him).

We opened the bowling with left-arm adult debutant U-14 Affan Kundi who slanted it across and swung it back in bowling left arm over to trouble all their batters. He also used his head bowling fuller length to a steady backfoot player and ultimately bowling him with an inswinging full ball after having their best bat (the great Hanif Mohammed's grandson) caught at mid wicket by a back-peddling Deepak Panwar FIRST BALL. Aryan bowled superbly to a packed off side field and deserved his 3 wicket haul. Both bowled intelligently to their hardhitting top scorer J Malnick (who made 71 off 40 balls) until Shaariq castled him with a super flipper. The opening spell left Old Citizens on 60-5 off 12. Arvind came on first change for Affan to try and take out the dangerous Malnick but 16 balls into his spell Malnick took the old steam engine out with a brute hit back smashing the bowler's hand in a desperate catching attempt. Deepak came on for Aryan, and then changed ends after a dodgy first over to bowl 3-0-26-0. Shaariq turned in a spell of 4-0-13-3 to finish the contest more or less with a superb exhibition of flighted and bouncy leg spin bowling with his full repertoire with a bowled, caught and bowled and a stumped (flash work by Tom Hudson). Deputising skip Rashard finished deposed skip's over with 2 balls for 2 runs and gave young Reece a decent spell of 3-0-9-0 (adjusting well after a shortish first over, to the demands of longer pitch in adult cricket). Scott Rutherford bowled like he had never been away to garner 4-1-8-0. Charlie Hobday 2.4-0-6-1 and a Shaariq run out finished them off at 142 all out (32.4 overs).

Great positives from the game with the colts backed by Charlie Hobday doing really well. The 5 colts who played were Reece Jones (53 not out), Affan Kundi (2/36), Aryan Thakrar (3/24), Ronak Patel (18) and Shaariq (3/13). Almost colt Tom Hudson kept brilliantly and anchored the opening well with 31 (narrowly failing to make it 3 tons in a row); just one mistake. Coach Charlie Hobday smashed 117 to put the icing on the colts' cake. Played 4 won 4 with the young colts taking front-line roles all the time on Sundays, is a good start to our season. Amazing Eastcote talent factory and thanks to all the age group coaches and our set-up who develop their talent.

Eastcote won by 142 runs (Old Citizens halving our score of 284).

Pleasure and privilege to be with this bunch and this club.

ADDITIONAL REPORT:

Onto Game 4 on 12 May and a chance to avenge two earlier losses in 2017 and 2018 to Old Citizen’s CC (whose skipper Richard Hillman was a comrade-in-arms-colt with our Director of Cricket Marc Broom at our very Eastcote, years ago). Fuller went first ball and the Hudson made only 31 but then Charlie Hobday made a brilliant 117 and Reece Jones hit a scintillating 53 not out at number 6 (this adult maiden 50 being a maiden 50 full stop, for this young genius all-rounder: who bats, bowls seam, keeps wickets and still sports a toothpaste advertisement smile of immense proportions). 284 for 9 in 40 overs was enough as U-14 Affan Kundi (on debut) took out the great Hanif Mohammed’s grandson first ball and then another, swinging the ball like Akram; with u-17 Aryan Thakrar (his new ball partner) taking 3/24 off 7 controlled overs with 1 (cricket) maiden. Shaariq Sheikh with 3/13 hastened the end for the Old Citizens (142 all out in 32.4 overs).
