Match report MATCH REPORT: SUNDAY 9 JUNE 2019 FRIENDLY AT HOME: EASTCOTE CC BEAT WINDERMERE CC BY 111 RUNS

Eastcote CC won the toss in a 40 (limited) overs game and elected to bat on a day when weather threatened but didn't quite spoil. The old firm of the in-form Tom Hudson and Rashard Fuller was restored to the top of the order and boy did they fully oblige by playing superlative cricket with a good selection of shots. Tom is looking well nigh invincible and Rashard moved late and used the crease depth well and also had a strong head position over the ball building the innings on a solid foundation. Tom raced to his fifty well ahead of the Fuller with a dazzling array of 6 fours and 3 sixes off just 22 balls. However Fuller lived up to his name by just pipping Tom to the ton. Long story short, Rashard and Tom put on 218 for the opening wicket stand (to add to the unbeaten 361 they put on for the opening wicket in their first Sunday game together); by far and away the two highest opening stands at the club on Sundays in the near past (this season). There was also the small matter of a second wicket stand of almost 200 in between. This should encourage all batters looking for stands together to have the same roof over their heads. Rashard snicked off (a loose shot getting him out) at 105 (49 balls, 10 fours and 7 sixes) in the 16th over and Tom retired minutes later on 101 not out (47 balls, 11 fours and 5 sixes). Until Rashard made a mistake they looked like they could get to 400 together, such was their control and ball selection. Dhanesh Jegatheesan (who replaced his father in the team in the morning more by design than accident) holed out early for 3 batting at one-drop (and then had to watch his father smash 31 off just 26 balls for the opposition with 6 fours..most of his own bowling). Krish Patwal failed to make use of the number four slot by making just 5 before getting trapped in front. 232 for 3 and 1 retired after 19 overs was slowing the momentum and dominance a bit and that is where we have to get more professional and learn not to let slip a position of command (rather than consolidating such a position). Concentration is of paramount importance whilst batting and we let that drop and some batters did not make use of the top order batting opportunity with many overs to go.

Jawwad Mahmud joined son Shaariq M Sheikh (promising to coach in the middle a bit...not sure if he did). Jawwad fell for a crisp 14 with the team on 262 (19 balls with 2 fours) after a sound stand of 30 with Shaariq, who went on to make a solid 34 (off 38 balls with 4 fours). Promoted to number seven, Aryan Thakrar played a pull from a static position to hole out at short midwicket for just 2 (274 for 5 and 1 retired in over 29) and Eastcote were struggling to reach 300 rather than cross 400. The cometh-the-hour-man came again as Charlie Hobday strode in like a colossus and proceeded to bat like a supremely confident colossus striking 4 fours and 4 sixes in a 25-ball 48 which helped propel Eastcote past 300 and past a run rate of 8 an over. Rohit worked the ball around at number 9 for an unbeaten 6 as Joban at 10 proceeded to run himself out for 2 and Arvind at 11 hit a sweet sweep but took a ball on his pads (rather than bat) to fall for just that 4. Eastcote were 9 out (and 1 retired) for just 343 off 39 overs failing once again to bat the full quota of overs. It was not great batting after a very good start and to me we were perhaps a 80-100 short of what we should have got with that start. That too against a 10-man opposition. However, Windermere's bowling was quite good and the wicket-keeper got 3 wickets after swapping the gloves with his skipper. Their shoulders never dropped and their spirits were always high.

Windermere went aggressively intent on chasing the 344 required down in 40 overs, with their best two batters opening the innings. Kiran the unorthodox hitter and keeper Jainesh the intelligent placer. Aryan Thakrar opened from the Car Park End and bowled an indifferent 6 overs for 44 with quite a few wides. He opted for a 6-3 field rather than 7-2 or 8-1 which he uses well; and the resultant split line resulted in a not so Aryan like opening spell. However, he also had good game plans and looked to produce a wicket by plotting batters out, which was good to see. His pace was also up a bit. Arvind targeted Kiran but came off after poor 3 overs for 26; replaced by the ever-potent Shaariq Sheikh. Aryan was replaced by the fast off spin of Krish Patwal. Eastcote disappointed a bit with some poor fielding and dropped catches all day long and the body language wasn't great initially as the opposition went to almost 100 without loss and were 141 at the halfway stage for just 2 wickets. Skipper's target of 150 was long forgotten and some hard words from Jawwad early on and and Arvind at drinks, helped kick some life into the troops. It is human nature to relax when the match is in the bag but champs are made from teams who press on to new goals and kill matches off. Every run given away should hurt. Bowlers should also have clear plans on not just how to bowl accurately and restrict but more importantly how to get batters out and how to set different fields for two different types of batters at the wicket and also how to use fielders like chessmen rather than bog standard 6-3 or 5-4 fields with mostly same fielding positions. With an asking rate of over 8 and a half an over, we could squeeze the game out by protecting the boundaries but allowing the opposition to be 141 for 2 (of which one was a run out) after 20 overs was not great cricket. Morever, with that high asking rate: we should have got wickets more regularly and quickly.

Shaariq bowled 6 overs on the spin and Krish 7. Krish was more accurate with flat fastish spin (7-0-29-1) but Shaariq (first 6 overs 6-0-46-1) looped and spun the ball well and looked to get batters out by guile whilst Krish relied more on batter error. Both bowled well and made a good combo (but only got 2 wickets in the 15 overs between them whilst Aryan and Arvind's opening spells got none). Not so good. The silver lining in these first 20 overs or so was Rashard Fuller's superlative fielding at mid off and long off which resulted in 2 catches and 2 run outs during the day; with a pick up and bullet throw (whilst fully airborne) standing out as world class.

Rohit bowled 7 overs of attacking off spin coming on for Shaariq from the pub end and looked for wickets and got two (7-0-32-2). Shaariq then came back to finish his spell (8-1-48-2). Dhanesh replaced Krish from the Car Park end as soon as Jag the Dad strode out to bat. The senior Jegatheesan's punitive blade smashed the ball around and fielders gave the shots due respect. He looked every inch a Sri Lankan master with a huge sun hat, starched whites and figure to match. Dhanesh tried manfully but hardly troubled his dad, to come off after 3 overs for 21 wicketless runs. In came another dad (but this one had replaced his son in the team in the morning) Joban Singh, who gave us a masterclass of flighted guileful attacking off spin to snare 2 in 4.2 overs for just 14 runs with 1 (cricket) maiden; the match-ending wicket being a wonderful froward diving catch at gully by Chobday which atoned for his earlier hard work in the field; and also atoned for the generally colourful fielding throughout. Tom Hudson took the time to catch one and stump one and Rohit took a smart catch too, to remind us that all was not lost in the field.

Eastcote did a Nelson, winning by 111 runs but it could have been a double.

Tom Hudson and Rashard Fuller were Men of the Match and the Dad of the Match was shared by Jag (oppo) and our very own Joban, with Jawwad gracefully letting them get on with it. Jag also edged the best outfit award on either side. A lesson that we should all look the part too. All in all a nice Eastcote family weekend following Sir Clive and Zach's show on Saturday.

The lads did well to keep the winning Sunday momentum.

On! On!!

ADDITIONAL REPORT:

Game 7 saw Windermere CC back again. This time we batted first with another toss win and Hudson (101 no) and Fuller (105) put on 218 for the first wicket, ably supported by Chobday 48 and Shaariq 34. 343/9 (off 39 overs) was how we closed, Huddo having retired on his ton. Shaariq Sheikh, Rohit Venkateshan and Joban Singh took 2 wickets each as we chipped away and won by 111 runs with 10 balls to spare. At 7-0…the season was looking promising.
