REPORT OF SUNDAY ONES VS HARROW ST MARYS IN CVL DIV 2 ON SUNDAY 11 AUGUST:

Got away with a draw at Harrow St Mary's on Sunday. They are either strong on Sundays (had 7 Sat Prem first teamers yesterday) or struggle to get a team out if they have MDL. So they are second from bottom, although unbeaten in the CVL this year, like us. After Sunday's no result we both remain unbeaten; albeit 12 points apart (but we have won 3 to their 2).

Eastcote won the toss (and with groundsman intel that the pitch was used from the day before and difficult to bat on second on Saturday); we batted. Opened up with CVL debutant u13 Krish Patel (stepping in as opener and keeper for the peerless Tom Hudson on groundsman duty at home). Also missed his opening partner Rashard Fuller (on groundsman duty at Radlett). So Jafer Chohan played his first CVL game this season and first as opener for Eastcote. The two battled through a decent new ball seam attack on and uneven slow seaming and spinning track with craters on the batting crease; not easy to stand on and less so to play strokes on. Krish fell for a solid 12 to a kicker into his body (ct squareleg): 30 for 1 (10th over). Akhil Sofat (2) was superbly caught off a rebound at slip (33 for 2 in the 11th over). Amaan Lakhani and Jafer ground it out then Amaan (5) got a kicker ....51 for 3 (14.2 overs) Unfortunately Jafer fell to a return catch as the ball stopped on him just 3 balls later for a battling 15 (55 for 4..14.5 overs). We were up agianst it and appreciated the support of Messrs Martin and Manley (who graced the ground with their presence). At this stage we were praying for a score of 150 to 200 but aware that anythign would be defendable especially as the wicket would get no better and we had 7 spinners and 3 seamers in our side...all regular bowlers. However 10 all rounders meant the batting wasn't that strong on the day.

GSG fell soon after gloving a kicker for 3 (57 for 5) then Sam Harvey took over with the new England bold approach. Two smashed sixes and a quickfire 20 propelled us to 80 but then he got done by a shoulder high non ball full toss not spotted (caught on the midwicket fence). It did not look like our day. The off spin twins Saihaj and Saavan got 18 and 16 and then Saihaj feell to a world class catch running in from the squareleg fence and diving forward when he looked totally in control inspite of the pitch (113 for 7 and we were breathing a bit). We again lost wickets in pairs (Saavan gone at 118 off a drive to a ball which stopped on him) and then Arvind snicked a defensive pushoff a left armer turning away low to first slip for a duck to leave us at 125 for 9. Ron Pratley was battling gamely (6 not out) but last man Anmol Chopra smashed sixes and fours to race to 25 until he missed a pull. However 150 looked a good score (although sadly we still had 7 unused overs left) but they bowled superbly and the pitch was doing all sorts. Not a bad batting display in the sense that no one gave their wickets away and we were disciplined and done more by the pitch and good bowling on that responsive pitch. Saturdays scores on that track had been 137 and 93.

Opened up with Sam Harvey and Ron Pratley. Sam wasn't his usual self and like him the next bowlers offie Anmol and leggie Jafer bowled too short. Ron bowled superbly bar a couple of short balls. In general we were too short on a track which was literally asking us to bowl them out for 100 and they took their chances with sringing shots (and put away our several bad balls) losing just an opener bowled by Anmol until the rain came down at 83 for 1 off 14.4 overs). Two of our best fielders also floored simple catches at slip (off Ron) and mid wicket fence (off Anmol).

Disappointing bowling effort and the fielding was not alert enough nor did we focus that well in the filed. We got away with 2 points each

The good news is that we are table topping and have 2 games left. We are one win away from winning Div 2 (fingers crossed)...table is as below:

ADDITIONAL MATCH REPORT:

Next week was game 15 (league match number 4) away; and we ran into a full strength Sat 1st team called Harrow St Marys (HSM). When they have MDL on they struggle to field a CVL team; but when they don’t have MDL on, they are usually the strongest CVL side in Div 2. After Sam Harvey’s quick middle order 20, last man Anmol Chopra came in at 125/9 and smashed a 25 off 17 balls to get us to 150. Then HSM sailed to 83/1 (off 14.4 overs) before the heavens heard our prayers and opened up, thus preserving our unbeaten league record. Such God’s grace and good fortune are often what define a super season.
