Match report Eastcote CC won a 40 overs limit game with Dubai Exiles batting on until 40 0vers completed to post 174 for 16 off 40 overs.

Eastcote CC replied with 232 (allowed to bat on) for 7 off their 40 overs crossing the target with 5 wickets down to win by 5 wickets.

FULL MATCH REPORT:

The Dubai Exiles turned up at ECC on the last day of July and announced that they be playing a new format…40 overs per side but they meant it literally: 40 overs…..even if they lost 240 wickets. I used to coach kids in an India school with a cricket game variation using baseball style rotating batters but this was something else altogether. They also declared that they had tossed in the bus enroute and decided to bat. Frankly, I didn’t give a toss. Well Eastcote is known for its teas and er…hospitality so we nodded enthusiastically and wondered if Will Dunn would approve. As it turned out Mr John Clouting did approve, so much so that he snapped the legendary scoreboard at the end of the Dubai innings of 40 overs, which bore the legend: 174 for 16. I snapped him snapping that scoreboard, so we both snaffled a piece of history. Eastcote took it easy in reply, ambling their way to 232 for 7 (off 40 overs). After all, two can play at that game. I suppose we would say we won by 5 wickets (which is what we lost when crossing 174); however, we may have won by more since they were around a 100 when they lost their first 10 wickets; or we could say we won by 58 runs and/or 9 wickets (the difference between the runs scored and the wickets lost). There are endless possibilities when fact transcends the realm of fiction. Of the 16 wickets which fell; the air forcedly efficient Ron Pratley took 6 for 28 off 8 overs (the bowlers were limited unlike the batters; which provided a whole new dimension to the expression: “Limited overs cricket”). U-12 Ayaan Sheikh helped himself to another 4 fer (8-1-38-4); it’s almost becoming boring the ease with which he sends batters packing. On this day however, they weren’t quite sent packing, just sent to bide their time before returning to continue their knock. Jazib Naeem (an ex-Dubai resident) ploughed his way to 2/25 although he just ambled up and bowled at Dubai pace, whilst Arav Oodit, Shashank Kurra, Sam Harvey and yours truly took a wicket each to embed themselves in the quirky history of this game. We hated to do another Dubai on them but then Fuller and Hudson had the final say, so they walked out as openers, to treat the spectators to another piece of free entertainment (minus the bar charge) whilst the Dubai bowlers and fielders risked their lives. They got bored quickly, so scored only 90 between them (rather than their usual 200 or 300 plus); the Fuller was fuller and got 67 of those. Jay Madan was 84 short of his customary ton at number three and Jazib went easy on Dubai too (just 17)…Jazz!!! Shalin declared that he wasn’t quite feeling it but liked the feel of scoring 6 so much that he left it at that. Shashank Kurra had no sympathy for the middle of the east (would that be the cricket pitch); so he stroked a lively 41 at number 6 and joined hands with the apologetic Sam Harvey who pieced together an apathetic 27 as guinea pig number 7. Ayaan Sheikh 15 not out and Arav Oodit 3 not out ensured that we faced all of our 240 balls. The Dubai guys were obviously better at marketing and finance than cricket because they had roped in Porsche as their sponsor and bore the car makers name proudly on their attire. I wondered about asking them if Porsche had started putting speed governors on their cars but decided to let it ride. Stuttgart is involved with Porsche too, which is puzzling since the Dubai Exiles wore spikes and not studs.
