Eastcote CC U11B v Harrow St Mary's on Mon 20 May 2024 at 18:00
Eastcote CC Won by 4 wickets
Match report
On the heels of a loss at the hands of Stanmore last week, a reinvigorated Eastcote hosted Harrow St Mary’s, narrowly taking the home win. Eastcote captain Jayleen Toor led an all-U11B squad onto the field after winning the toss and electing to bowl. Bowling mainstay Shae opened the innings, denying the strike rotation, and was followed by Anagha Matada, who claimed the first wicket of the match as debutant Paras Singh watch the ball come off V Vaidya’s bat and straight into his hands. HSM made slow but steady progress until spin-bowler Svanik Chadha was brought in to change the pace. O Jobanputra was dismissed after a runout by wicket keeper Shubham Sahu. Svanik would have cleared another wicket during his second over for a wonderful caught and bowled, but was disallowed as the double-bounce delivery was declared a no ball. At the end of the 10th over, after some off-field hubbub, match officials were notified that the pitch length had been incorrectly set to 22yds rather than the prescribed 17yds for U11 matches. After a brief deliberation, the two team managers agreed to revert to the correct pitch length for the remainder of the match. After another length bout of safe but steady batting by HSM, Yusuf Merali sent the bails to Wales, and opposition captain/opener A Gupta to the locker room. Proving her worth once more, Shae dismissed P Alagiya with a plum LBW. HSM managed to pull the score towards and beyond 100-runs, and in the closing balls of the innings, Svanik managed to steal another wicket; this time a snick of A Srini's bat an into Shubham’s waiting gloves. Harrow St Mary’s closed the innings with a healthy 126 after 20 overs.
Opening the batting for Eastcote was Svanik Chadha and Riyan Malcolm. Unfortunately, both of their tenures were short-lived, with P Alagiya taking a catch off Riyan, and G Singh taking one from Svanik. Replacing them were Shubham Sahu, and Yusuf Merali, respectively, the latter making his presence well and truly known by the end of the match. Picking off singles wherever possible, this pair brought the score up into the 30’s by the end of the 6th over. Alas, wicket keeper O Jobanputra took pleasure in returning the favour owed to him by Shubham from their innings, and stumped him out during spin-bowler A Dhankhar’s over. Next up to the crease was first-timer Aditya Bhandari, who formed a formidable partnership with Yusuf, scoring 49 runs between them over the course of the next 11 overs. A catch by O Jobanputra from A Parwar’s ball brought the alliance to an end as Aditya was replaced by Rohan Karia for his debut match. Yusuf was finally taken out of the game at the end of the 18th over by G Singh (caught and bowled), but by this point, Eastcote were on 115 runs and set up for the win. No sooner had Aryan Modi stepped up to the crease, Rohan was walking back after S Heweyalage’s ball ricocheted into G Singh’s hands for his third catch of the match. With Paras Singh now in assistance, Aryan Modi helped get Eastcote over the line, managing a glance down fine leg for a four in the penultimate over, and Paras making the final play of the match for 2 runs, ending the match with a wide delivery from G Singh on the 20th over. Eastcote win at home by 4 wickets.
Player of the Match goes to Yusuf Merali for his 35 solo runs, contribution to a partnership of 49 runs, and dominating batting and fielding duties alike.
