Eastcote CC Sunday 1st Team v Southall Dragons 1st Team on Sun 18 Jun 2023 at 1 pm
Match was Abandoned ECC 335 for 2 (off full 40 overs); rained off.

Match report Match just lasted one 40-over innings, then the rain came and stayed enough to get the fixture abandoned. Eastcote won the toss and batted on a hot muggy day with the threat of rain looming.

We had two left handers so again opted to start with a left right combination (Vinay Rachakonda and Neil Magdani). They started well and we were 48/0 (in 6 ov) and 71/0 (in 10 ov) but then two good spinners shackled us quite a bit so we were 125/0 at the halfway stage and then 193/0 (off 30 overs). Then trying to up the rate Neil (playing for the team) got run out going for a second and Jazib went in (with 8 overs to go).

Jazib played one of the most hardhitting knocks I have ever seen and hit a ton off just 31 balls ending with 105 not out off 32 balls. He played just two dot balls. His scoring sequence was: 166126646624166241411142242464. Some sixes were hit so high and powerful that the ball disappeared into the other side of nowhere and some fours were hit so hard that no one moved. 4 replacement balls had to be provided in the last 5 overs. Jazib was 89 when the faced the last 5 balls of the innings. A dot, a couple and a four got him up to 95 with two balls left. Then a straight six disappeared over the sightscreen (to get him to a well deserved ton); and a four was blasted so hard (last ball) that no one moved. Their skip suffered severe hand and arm damage trying to stop a ferocious cover drive, such was the power and bat speed of Jazib on the day. It was a mastery of power hitting never seen by me or our team; and by far the fastest ton I have ever seen. I am honoured and lucky to have played cricket in the same team as Jazib for so many years (16 to be precise).

208/1 off 32 when Jazib came in. Then the run sequence for the last 8 overs was: 219, 235, 255, 270, 293, 305, 318 & 335.
127 runs were scored in the last 8 overs at 16 runs per over. This is how one has to accelerate and build on a solid start in a limited overs game. Had we powered away earlier we would have crossed 400. The sky is the limit if one aims for the sun.

We were saying in the pavilion: There is no way Jaz can get a ton in 8 overs, but he did. On! On!!

Vinay retired after a brilliant steady 100 (to add to his ton for the Sunday 2s in September last year, also unbeaten). Vinay and Neil put on 208 for the first wicket in 32 overs and were 104/0 (off 17 ov) in a solid start.

Shubham (playing for the team) got bowled off an inside edge (going for 6).

Agastya Daphale (went in in a no win situation) and gave Jazib the strike and hit some good shots to help us cross 300 from 255 for 2 (with 4.5 overs left).

We were in pole position for a win (hopefully another big one) but rain robbed us.

It was good to get 335 for 2 (off 40 overs) at 8.4 runs per over. Shades of our destructive batting first in the smashing winning season of 2019 when Jazib, Tom and Rashard ran riot with the bat (scoring well over 2500 runs between them). Now for a sterner test in the league next week away to Hemel; Hempsted (with an MDL clash meaning we won't be anywhere near full strength).

Dinesh Daphale kindly agreed to umpire the game at the last minute cancelling his plans for us. Huge thanks to him and to Umair for scoring the full 40 overs, Deepak for leg umpiring 25 overs and Negi for scoring 30 overs and umpiring 4. This is the commitment to the team we should all emulate.
